Angelo Floria started his volunteer firefighter service in 1953 as a 16-year old with the Hillandale Volunteer Fire Department in Montgomery County, Maryland.  He progressed through the ranks of Firefighter, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, and Captain/Station Commander of Hillandale’s Station Twelve.  Angelo was also an aide to Hillandale’s legendary Chief Marvin Gibbons [later an Honorary Member of the Ocean City Volunteer Fire Company] and forged the precedent-setting mutual aid agreement between Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties.  Angelo is a Life Member of Hillandale and in 1989 was enshrined into the Montgomery County Volunteer Firefighters Hall of Fame.  In 1992, Angelo retired as a civilian with the Department of Defense and moved to Ocean City.  His homebuilder, Chris Larmore, is an Ocean City firefighter and, through their friendship, Angelo began to take standby nights with the Snorkel Eleven crew as a visiting firefighter.  Also, he would listen to his scanner and show up at incidents to help re-pack hose, etc.  In 1995, Angelo became a seasonal call taker with Ocean City Communications where he became friends with the fire dispatcher, Mike Ellingsworth, also a FOOLS member.  On the night of February 18, 1997, Angelo received a phone call from Chris Larmore with the news that he had been elected into the Ocean City Volunteer Fire Company as an Honorary Member.  This came as a complete surprise and was one of the happiest events of his life.  Since that time, Angelo has been an active participant with OCVFC and remains SCBA qualified.  He is now a seasonal Fire/EMS dispatcher and looks forward to May 2003 when he hopes to celebrate 50-years as an active volunteer firefighter.
